ปะการังตระกูลถ้วยส้ม จริง ๆ แบ่งได้หลายชนิด โดยรวมจะอยู่ใน Family Dendrophyllidae
ซึ่งประกอบไปด้วยปะการังชนิดต่าง ๆ มากมาย บางชนิดเราจะพบเห็นกันบ่อย
และบางชนิดก็เป็นปะการังที่เราไม่ค่อยจะพบเห็นซักเท่าไหร่นัก โดยปกติปะการังในตระกูล Dendrophyllidae
จะเป็นปะการังที่เลี้ยงง่าย โดยเฉพาะปะการังที่สังเคราะห์แสง เนื่องจากมีวิธีการได้รับอาหารหลากหลายรูปแบบ
แต่หากเป็นปะการังตระกูลถ้วยส้ม จะต่างออกไป ปะการังถ้วยส้มจะไม่สังเคราะห์แสง แต่จะกินอาหารที่ได้รับจากการป้อน
หรืออาหารที่มากับกระแสน้ำ จึงเป็นปะการังที่เหมาะกับนักเลี้ยงที่มีเวลาป้อนอาหารให้มัน
แต่ด้วยความสวยงามของปะการังถ้วยส้ม จึงทำให้ปะการังชนิดนี้ คงอยู่ในใจผู้เลี้ยง ตราบนานเท่านาน

การจำแนกตามความต้องการของผู้เลี้ยง มักเป็นการจำแนกตาม ความสวยงาม ความแปลกตา รูปร่าง มากกว่า

จำแนกตามสี

ปะการังถ้วยส้ม จริง ๆ ตามชื่อ คือสีส้ม แต่สำหรับนักเลี้ยงที่เลี้ยงไปนาน ๆ จนชำนาญ
และได้พบเห็นปะการังถ้วยส้ม ชนิดต่าง ๆ มากขึ้น จึงพบว่า ปะการังถ้วยส้ม มีสีมากกว่าที่คิด

เราจะจำแนกสี ไปพร้อม ๆ กับการจัดวางตัวของโครงร่างหินปูน ทำให้สามารถแยกออกมาได้คร่าว ๆ แต่ไม่ทั้งหมด
เพราะปะการังแต่ละ species เอง ก็มีความหลากหลายของการกระจายสี อยู่เช่น กัน ทั้ง ๆ ที่เป็นชนิดเดียวกัน
